Heavy flooding in southern Thailand closed all rail lines, cutting off 1m people, including our family.
We were turned back at butterworth station, with a full refund, and sadly had to limp along to Penang airport to fly to Bangkok instead.

In 2008 when we were living in Vietnam, Robert and I realised you could go by train from Saigon to London. We talked about it on and off as the "big trip" for Dad (about to turn 40) and Son (about to turn 12). In 2010 we were living in Singapore, and I changed jobs, giving me a slightly longer summer vacation. We decided to use this time to let the train take the strain. We flew from Singapore to Hong Kong and then travelled entirely by train to Scotland over 15 days.
